This magazine studies the underground art scene, supporting anti-establishment regimes for the world of art and expression in a modern world. Most characters are fictional, but the words are curated to encourage meaningful discussions around the theory of Art and Design in a contemporary society. All essay’s, art and design were created by myself. And, dare I say, this is by far my favourite work.
To quote an Vincent Van Gogh, a featured artist in this somewhat fictional publication I created…..
“What am I in the eyes of most people—a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person—somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. . . I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart. . . Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony, and music inside me.”
THE IDEA
CULT Magazine is a fictional brand I created for an intro to typography course I took. The project was intended to showcase our gained skills in InDesign but I wanted to explore more than that. I have always appreciated the art of layout, the details or typography and the structure of the grid. So, this magazine was to explore the variations of these layouts while also contributing my own ideas.
THE DESIGN
The cover illustration was a quick design I cooked up in Illustrator and linked to the file. Other visual assets, like the photos, were collected as royalty-free images and then highly edited in photoshop and Illustrator to create my desired effects.
Stylization took a heavy hand as the content sought to disrupt and challenge conventional ideas. The grungy design was a visual response to what was being written which, I believe, was a holistic necessity. How can you design a magazine when you don’t even understand the voice behind it?!
Color was primarily black and white with the accent of red. This limitation helped me focus on texture and composition rather than the palette to communicate such ideas.
THE CONTENT
I took the liberty on this project to create and curate each article based on research and inspired lessons from past courses. Much of my ideas are masked to match the tone of the magazine, a radical liberation, and do not accurately reflects my beliefs and values. Or do they?
I fell in love with Futura here, and to this day still do.
